Meditation Workshop with Hugh Byrne

All-Levels
Lecture/Discussion, Guided Mindfulness Meditations

Mindfulness is a quality of being present with our direct experience here and now—opening to bodily sensations, emotions, thoughts and mind states with kindness and without judgment.

Bringing a kind, non-judging awareness to our direct experience allows us to identify and let go of patterns of clinging, aversion and distraction and cultivate presence, peace and well-being. Training our hearts and minds through mindfulness, self-compassion and loving-kindness helps us to live with greater ease and freedom.

In this meditation workshop we will explore mindfulness and its benefits, as shown in many neuro-science studies, practice opening to our experience in guided meditations, and discuss skillful ways of working with ‘hindrances’, including difficult emotions and mind states and discursive thoughts.

Face Your Fears and Fly with Lisa Martinez

All-Levels
Asana

Headstands, forearmstands, handstands… Oh my!!

If you’ve been practicing yoga for a little bit or even for a long while, some of these so-called advanced  yoga poses still can make some of us cringe with fear. Challenging yoga poses can feel quite intimidating at first even to the strongest and most flexible people. The thought of trying any one of these and falling most spectacularly is enough to make us shake our heads and turn away.

But what if you just tried? What if you were given some techniques to understand yourself and your body in order to make these poses a little more accessible? What if falling wasn’t the worst but maybe part of the process?

In this workshop, you’ll learn not only tips and techniques to find the strength and the balance to work toward these poses but also how confronting your fears regarding these skills can retrain your brain to confront other fears that may be challenging you in life. Agency, ownership, persistence and hope—explore how these motivating factors can help you not only fly on the mat but maybe a little in life as well.

A Practice in Loving Kindness with Karen Andujar

All-Levels
Asana, Meditation

Intentional thoughts and actions of loving kindness and compassion are powerful practices that can transform a moment or a lifetime. During this 90-minute, all levels workshop, we will explore and cultivate these qualities through a practice of breath work, postures, contemplation and meditation. We will develop strength and stamina through longer holds in standing postures, and steadiness and space through the breath. Guided by invitations to remember the support, love, kindness, compassion, and humanity in our lives, we journey from what we receive to what we can gift–to others and to ourselves.

What to expect: An all-levels, alignment based Hatha practice that will begin with the breath and include three optional rounds of sun salutations. We will bring dynamic movement and holds to standing postures before coming down to the mat to twist the spine and open the hips, finally making our way onto our backs for a body scan and deep relaxation. We will close the practice with a short, seated meditation. Variations of postures, from beginner to intermediate, will be offered to allow participants to meet themselves where they are and tailor the practice to meet their needs.

11:00 am – 12:30 pm

Armed with Yoga, Stand and Fight with Hari-kirtana das

All-Levels
Lecture/Discussion

*Values and Strategies for Progressive Spiritual Activism*

Political positions are not about policy; they’re about morality. Voters don’t vote in accordance with their self-interest: they vote in accordance with their values. In a political climate where the metaphysical realm of values and moral imperatives govern the physical realm of policies and their consequences, it’s all the more important to have a clear sense of how spiritual knowledge helps us to live purpose-driven lives. Engagement with the world is an essential component of personal spiritual development. In this session, Hari-kirtana das will describe six core values of yoga and demonstrate how we can translate those values into clearly defined strategies for social engagement. Participants will gain knowledge of how universal principles of spiritual activism work, how we can imbue our activism with spiritual power, and how to maintain our equilibrium in a challenging socio-political environment.

Way of the Happy Sacrum with Dr. Ariele Foster

All-Levels
Asana, Lecture/Discussion

A supple yet sturdy pelvis is the rock star of your skeleton. It transmits forces from the lower body through the core, spine and beyond.

The sacrum is a pivotal pelvic bone, and, when healthy, it has just enough wiggle room to adjust to the twists and turns of everyday movements and asana.

It can be destabilized, however, through repeated over-stretching, asymmetrical forces or high impact, like a hard fall on the bum. A destabilized sacrum is an ouchy, unhappy sacrum

A few techniques and the right approach to yoga asana can stabilize our back-sides and turn the frowns upside down.

Transform your yoga into a sacrum-smart practice with Dr. Ariele Foster, physical therapist, yoga teacher, and founder of YogaAnatomyAcademy.com. This workshop will be part lecture, part asana, open to all levels. Attendees receive a PDF of a sacrum-stabilizing sequence they can continue at home.
